So the question is, what movies do you think would not/could not be made today? I will begin with To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (IMDb).

this might be a hot take, but i don't know if any seth rogen movies from 2008-2012 would probably get made today. some of them like Superbad and This is the End had a bunch of dialog that probably would have got either edited out or just have not landed as well as it did back then.

Yeah, that dialog was great but definitely in a way that would be frowned upon today. Even Revenge of the Nerds movies if they were somehow made would probably be rated R or above just for the language and nudity. Porkies too.

You can get away with saying a lot of shit if you're a skinny nerd or a fat guy. You couldn't have hot people saying their lines though

It's not too offensive, I think, but this type of stupid humor is not really a thing anymore. It was in the age of Seann William Scott / American Pie type of comedy.

In the 80's, before Blockbuster homogenized the video store, there was a glut of B-tier direct to video movies.

Those comedies are great, because they're mostly a series of loosely connected sketches, with actors you've only seen in other B-movies.

You want to see grannies in a shootout with the cops? A karate dojo full of 8 year olds beating up on the bad guy? A snowball fight that determines who gets to be the ski champion? They have you covered.

None of it makes sense and it usually cuts to credits very abruptly, but 80's DTV comedies got you covered, and I'm very thankful that some boutique labels have been restoring them.

I was surprised by how many DTV movies Amazon Prime has. We have been hitting up the B, C, and D level movies on their service for about a year now. Now if they would get rid of the Riff-Tracks (poor homage to MST3K) so I don't have to doom scroll past them it would be great.

And if you haven't already, I would suggest watching Llamageddon (IMDb) and/or ThanksKilling (IMDb).

The best thing about Llamageddon is one guy has a different shirt in every scene. Even for scenes that take place in the same room, each time the camera is on him its a different shirt. I almost feel like it was a continuity error they had in the first couple scenes they filmed and decided to make it a thing all the way through.

Maybe we need a bad movie recommendation thread......

A bad movie club, is pretty in line with a basement themed gimmick.

Slightly off topic maybe, but I think the fact that they're still showing the movie, but censoring a few scenes means they could still make it today. A few of the jokes would just be slightly different. Even that joke specifically seemed to be more about them being uncomfortable with genuine affection, and not "haha, bad word funny."

I know that wasn't your example of what couldn't be made today, just a thought I had. The other example though... the entire premise isn't gonna fly today.

Going in a slightly different direction, I might pick the original Star Wars. Compared to modern movies, it's very slow, and it's very sincere. There are more lingering shots, fewer jump cuts, and dialog happens at a normal human pace. Modern movies are almost nauseatingly fast by comparison. Also, for such a silly concept, the movie and the characters in it took everything seriously. There's no sarcastic quips, or ironic meta-humor. It's just trying to tell it's own simple story in a genuine way.

Maybe I'm exaggerating, but I feel like if it was remade today, the studio would add or change so much that it wouldn't really resemble the original any more.

OG Star Wars is essentially a mashup between two films from the 50's: The Hidden Fortress, and The Dambusters. So a 2023 "Star Wars" would be something like a mashup of A Perfect Storm and Stealth set in space (which actually sounds kind of cool if done right, IMHO).

The actual reason you can't make Star Wars today, is that it was a tectonic shift in sci-fi film production. It put a lot of effort into the special effects and used an orchestral score. I suspect it was something that would happen eventually, but it's something that just can't happen today with current special effects technology (love it or hate it) and an orchestral score is old hat. Imagine if they had used a Theremin and other early synthesizers in the soundtrack instead.

Really if you want to see what sci-fi was like prior to Star Wars, 1980's Flash Gordon (which if you haven't seen it already, what's wrong with you?!), was intentionally made to be a throwback to earlier sci-fi.

I wouldn't mind seeing John Carpenter's Star Wars, but it's not like I don't have a copy of Dark Star.
