So I'm having a bit of an extended weekend, and decided to visit some friends that live near the beach.

We went there today and the water was murky af, also the life guards flagged most of the area as dangerous, thanks to some huge winds that were going on.

We ended up chilling on the sand and drinking beers.

So how's the beaches in your area? Is the water clean or nah?

We're considering ditching the beach tomorrow and going to a nearby lake where the water is supposed to be cleaner, and less dangerous thanks to no undertow.

which country are you in?

beaches in the United States are pretty clean when there aren't any oil/garbage spills. east coast has warmer beaches with less waves, west coast is cooler with better waves for surfing.

Brazil! I should mention that I'm at the deep south, and the waters were not dirty (as in insanitary) as much as they were murky and mudded.

Which kind of puts you off if you can't see your feet when walking into jellyfish territory.

Beaches in my home country (the Netherlands) are nice. With clean water, white sand, and enough facilities (e.g. toilets, food/drink) around.

Beaches in the country I currently reside (Japan) suck balls. The sand looks dirty, the beaches are full of weeds, and generally not so pleasant to stay or swim at.

Unless you go to Okinawa, in which case the beaches are pleasant.

In all cases the water itself is fine though. Not anywhere close to murky.

Australia here, so yeah the beaches here are almost universally fantastic! Good sand, clean water and usually great weather. Just go on Google maps and select any beach and there is a 9 out of 10 you will see something that is pretty good. I think it is the trade off for having to wake up to huntsman spiders in your bed room.

It was funny when I went to New Zealand and found their beaches to be... different. Nice but in a very unique fashion.

Having watched Fligth of the Conchords I kinda expected you to comment that. Lmao

What's different about it?

It isn't so much sand but more fine pebbles most of the time or it is a much more muddy kind of sand mix. Just different to what I would expect. Also this sounds like the usual Aussie vs Kiwi thing going on and no it isn't that! :D

I haven't actually seen much of FoC but all that I have seen of them is pretty good.

Reporting back, the lake was top notch:

Had a couple beers, did a little swimming (I'm very much out of shape).

Go to your nearby lake guys, shits very nice.

I actually lived in Okinawa as a little kid and the beaches are nearly the only thing I remember. Snorkeling was amazing there, so much to see. We came back to the northeastern US and the beaches seemed like a cruel joke. Seaweed wrapping around your legs, jellyfish everywhere, icy cold water, "sand" that was basically just pebbles. Now as an adult, I can appreciate rocky cold New England beaches for what they are...a place to walk and contemplate man's fate in this bleak world.

Woah you nailed it. Shitty beaches do bring out the inner existencialist: slightly uncomfortable while under the sun. Such wasted potential, yet they are exactly as they are meant to be, huh

RS, right? I thought that you guys did the same as we do here in Paraná: flood Santa Catarina 'cuz the local beaches aren't worth the trouble. I don't recall jellyfish being an issue here but Matinhos has coarse sand, and the water is also kind of murky. (Plus all vileiros / chavs stirring trouble.)

Is that like a random pic from the net? Have you ever went to that specific beach? Would love to see a cellphone picture from that beach, I wonder how they compare.
