dumb things on websites really annoy me, mainly because i use websites but also because I build them! so I wrote a blog post on the first of many that annoy me: max character counts on password fields

i'm curious though if there's anything other annoying things on websites people have encountered. please post them whether they be horrible design or really bad UX

Good thread idea :)

In a similar vein, why is it that banks, who'd arguably have to have the least stupid requirements, are always the ones who have the most onerous, nonsensical password requirements?

also when they don't let you paste into the password field like cmon man i'm not spending 10 minutes typing this random string of characters by hand

Those are atrocious. Being restrictive on passwords already leads to reuse, so restrictions that make it easier to crack are inexcusable.

I hate when text fields don't let you tab between them. Type - Tab - Type is much faster than Type - Move hand over to mouse - Click - Move hand back to keyboard - Type.

Maybe just as annoying is butting buttons between username and password. I remember a website whose login page looked like: Username - Help I can't login - Password - Forgot password, so I would always type my username, press tab which would highlight the Forgot Password button, type my password and press enter. So every single time I would go to the Can't Login page.

It's silly but the reason behind the banks having strict password requirements (max char, only alpha numeric) is because they are still on mainframe systems where the password field is a fixed length char often plaintext.

  • Maximum Character Limits On Passwords

  • 500 Scripts At Once Which Do Nothing Except Track And Lag

  • Too Much Flashing, Not Epileptic Or Anything, I Just Don't Like Constant Flashing And Dark Mode Is Nicer On My Eyes

  • Payment Requirements, Such As On Articles

  • A Website Design Broken To The Point It Is Basically Unusable After Blocking Said Scripts On uMatrix

There is probably more I can think of, but those are the main things. It isn't that hard to design a good working website, or even one that is at least tolerable, but many fail it regardless somehow. Xenforo boards are a perfect example of the 2nd and last issue, they work but wow can they become broken. Also I look at the HTML and it hurts to see, although i will give them credit for often having many features, such as groups or a proper media gallery, and sometimes even chatrooms. Unlike something such as Acmlmboards, Xenforo is far from the basics even if I do wish it were more efficient at times, at least from the boards that I see it is laggy.

agree. I can only visit https://agoraroad.com on my desktop, going on mobile is completely out of the question because the site is stuffed to the brim with ads and really hard to avoid clicking sometimes

I don't see any advertisements, but I also managed to block everything on uMatrix if I had to take a guess, so despite not running uBlocker Origin, I am good. I don't use a phone at all anymore outside of a BlackBerry Torch 9860 which is really just a glorified camera (doesn't even use a SIM card btw), however, I do use websites on older devices like Nintendo DSi or Nintendo 3DS occasionally. And I've quickly noticed just how badly websites will lag, if they load at all, on these older devices.

It isn't particularly surprising on the DSi because it might as well not support HTTPS anymore, and the DSi only had 16 megabytes of RAM to work with total. Even if I could use swap-memory, it would be slow, outside of very, very simple websites. However, the Nintendo 3DS has 128 megabytes of RAM, and the "New" models have 256 megabytes and some other hardware upgrades. Yet despite it being very easy to develop a website which works properly on those devices still, its decided to make the website lag regardless. Every single website which works well doesn't place 50 things all over the screen, they go very simple and fast.

In the end, these types of websites work even on this laptop, probably in part due to it running Arch instead of Windows, but it can still be somewhat laggy and overall, annoying. I'd prefer something such as NSMB Hacking Domain's system over the lagginess of a Xenforo board.
