Not what you are expecting but recently I configured an old Lenovo mini 10 to run FreeDos. I have been plodding around Qbasic again as it was my 1st programming love. It is astounding just how simple (in a good way) it was for getting basic ideas done. The whole concept of BASIC that computers are tools to help you do things rather than just be a mental challenge is something I feel a lot of modern systems have forgotten to embrace. As Steve jobs said "Computers are a bicycle for the mind".

This is not to undermine modern development tools, it is just the 'feeling' of potential that has been lost mostly due to the fact that computers are a mature platform now and not in the explosive development phase.

I ended up making a clock screen saver that has a moving star field with the moon phase 'vaguely' calculated to be over laid.

I've been wanting a little wall mounted display, either e-paper or a no backlight screen for a while now. Mostly as a clock/calendar/display art. I'd also like a way to sync desktop notifications to it so I can see new emails/teams + discord messages on it.

I've made a couple prototypes with a raspi, but havn't gotten anything to a point I'd be willing to throw on a wall and leave there.

I just found a little e-paper display on Amazon that uses passive NFC to set the screen content, no power required. This is really appealing to me, but I'd like the ability to update the screen at least once every 15 minutes. There are some single chip NFC controllers, as well as raspi modules that can do NFC, but they are a bit bulkier then I would like (won't fit in a picture frame easily).

I'm considering using an old mobile phone as the NFC controller to set the screen contents, since that has a built in battery and NFC tech. With everything non-essential turned off I think the battery life should be 2-3 days, and I could easily recharge it. I've never written an Android app before, so I'm not sure how difficult it would be to make a control application.

Has anyone worked on anything similar, or aware of projects like this I could steal ideas from?
