currently operating a cock.li account, among others, but I'm looking for something a little more... professional, for general use.
paid is fine, but then it had better be good.

I've been using ProtonMail combined with Google Domains for a few years now. I've been very happy with it; I have multiple domains on one central account, great filtering abilities, the app and web portal work well (I prefer them to gmail by a large margin).

Been using Fastmail for many years. Fair price for what it provides, the webmail is decent too, but obviously you can use your own if that's your thing.
All round great service, support if you need it too.

I currently use Ionos.com, signed up with them back when they were still 1and1.com and first started offering to the public. Used to have a great deal since it came with webspace and email. The last 5 years though they have really tanked in their offerings and price isn't what it used to be. So I would not recommend them.

I have been considering moving my email to Proton mail along with my domains (mainly since I dont use the webspace anymore), but I dont like the limit they have on email address, and they don't specify if thats per domain or per account. Since I have 4 domains with active email that I would want to move, I also fall outside the 3 domain limit. Not sure why I didn't think of keeping my domains where they are and just changing the record though, so I might decide to do it anyways. What is your overall experience with them though, and do you use their other services (calendar, storage, VPN)?

I only use email. I use Mullvad for VPN, Google Calendar, and I have a fairly extensive home server for storage (encrypted zips of data important enough for off site backups go into Google Drive and a USB stick at undisclosed relative).
For the email setup the domain limit is only impactful if you need the ability the send from that domain, which I do not for most of mine.
I have wildcard addresses setup in Google Domains for everything, the ones that aren't aleady in ProtonMail forward to an address on one of the domains I do have in ProtonMail.
I've never had an issue with this setup, but if you need to be able to send from all your domains then I could see that being a potential problem.

I am considering a hybrid setup where I move my primary domains over to Proton and keep my spam domains elsewhere since I can easily forward those, and I do need to use my domain to send from. But thats great information, thank you.

Another +1 here. I have a custom domain and they handle it really well. I've needed to reach out to customer support twice and both times they were excellent.

i just found out cloudflare has free email forwarding for domains using their nameservers, so you can almost get a gmail client for free if you just forward [email protected]
to your personal email
and it'd be easy enough to just create a filter for incoming messages that were proxied by cloudflare
the amount of stuff cloudflare provides for free is insane to me

So does Google Domains, although I wouldn't actually advocate for using them as a registrar now considering how hard it is to recover a lost/locked Google account. Ive been thinking about migrating all my domains over to Cloudflare, glad to know they offer the same thing.

With your own domain you gain benefits such as:
Moving between providers
Encrypted email, that Google/Microsoft cant read at will
Highly customizable spam filters
Keep your email address even if the provider goes under

I've been using runbox.com for email for several years. They work well most of the time. They have more downtime than I would like. Seems they get DDOS attacks in waves. My last signup was for 3 years, when it expires I'll maybe go to fastmail. My old Gmail forwards to it and using custom domains is very easy.

i use gmail for job hunting and for my education but for casual usage i use Tutanota for making accounts on sites and forums i visit regularly. you can have a free account albeit with some limitations to it. pricings for it may vary depending on what you're gonna use tutanota for. https://tutanota.com/pricing the company tutanota came from is from Germany and i hear that country has strict laws on companies when data collecting is on the matter so i think its a safe bet that privacy plays a good role here for them.

Right now all I have is my personal gmail accounts, though I have used ProtonMail in the past and it's pretty good. I don't feel the need to use it at the moment, though I'll definitely go back to it if I do.
quoting RevD:

I've only used their VPN's free tier but it's pretty good. They don't do data caps on their free tier, they just restrict the server selection to either the US, Japan, and the Netherlands. Good if you're doing a lot but not the best if you just want to watch Argentinian Netflix.

Just to throw another +1 on fastmail. Incredibly reliable, works as it should. Especially the web interface. 10 out of 10.
