I think I've probably only seen like 1 godzilla movie in my entire life, but I think the sick-ass cover art for this movie made me want to watch it. It's very good, and I think I agree with a lot of reviews I've seen saying that if you took Godzilla out of the movie, it would still be pretty good. I also just learned there's a difference between Hollywood Godzilla movies and Japanese ones. I think I want to back and watch one the Hollywood ones and compare.
This film definitely does a good job at creating a universe with very believable characters. It takes places right after WWII in a defeated Japan, where everyone's morale is really low and the cities are desolated. It takes place over the course of about 5 years or so, so you start to see Japan's economy get better and people regaining some wealth. And then Godzilla comes in and fucks shit up and you're rooting for the Japanese people to kick Godzilla's ass because fuck i'm emotionally invested in these characters.

Oooh Godzilla! I absolutely love Godzilla movies, super glad that Minus One was able to introduce you and get you interested! It's a great entry-point to the series, giving you a good mix of both the human story and the big G itself.
If I could suggest a good next movie to watch in the series (provided you have any interest in the others) I would suggest either Shin Godzilla or the original 1954 Gojira. Both are fantastic and keep the serious, down-to-earth tone. '54 in particular is an utterly grim movie, especially with the scenes following Godzilla's rampage.

@warlock I was actually thinking of watching the '54 one, mainly because I was disappointed in the lack of the iconic Godzilla roar, and watched a compilation of all the roars and did not realize the iconic started in the original
