An acquaintance told me that a guy calling himself "macguyvermectin" (hilarious handle, BTW) had linked to one of my blog posts, so I thought I'd have a look around. I code for a living, I write bad sf on my lunch breaks, and I'm posting from a MEWNIX system; my sysadmin's a Maine Coon cat.

I didn't get my first computer until I was 18, and all it ran was PC-DOS (not even MS-DOS). That was back in the mid-1990s, and I started using Linux at home in 1998. So I tend to chuckle when I hear somebody going on about how systemd, Flatpak, and Wayland have "finally made the Linux Desktop happen".

So we are. That's a pleasant surprise.

Linux Desktop in 1998 was... fun...

I installed a Debian on a Pentium 166Mhz with 32MB RAM, a reasonable machine at the time but Windows 98 wasn't the kindest to it. But under Debian, you could boot to Desktop using only 4MB of RAM. A vision of a dream, it was a shame that there was no drivers for the moderm otherwise it would have become my daily driver then.

I have been daily driving Linux for about 15 years now, Triquel my distro of choice. One of the few 100% Free/Open Source available but it is definitely not for everyone. Hardware selection on it is very limited.

I liked your manifesto/rant/reply to some marketing bozo. I'm tired right now and not able to ponder things much, but I've bookmarked it to re-read in the morning when I'm more alert. It's highly relevant to the big sticky thread on my forum, so I'll probably discuss it with myself there later.

It'll be there when you're ready. Though I'm currently rearranging my website to get away from the blog paradigm, I've already set up 301 redirects so that if you don't get around to reading it before I launch the new version, your bookmark will still work.

I'm currently running a gimmick on my site whereby any visitor can "deface" the pages by editing them and saving a copy. The original page remains unharmed, and I've taken all possible measures against actual damage to either the website or its visitors. The whole thing is explained on my FAQ page:

https://www.devastatia.com/personal_homepage/faq

I had had a look at your homepage, and found the edit button, but hadn't messed with it. It's one thing to post on somebody else's forum, but to "deface" another person's website doesn't quite sit right with me. Cool idea, though.

You can't harm the site by "defacing" it. I've covered all of the attack vectors I can think of. The defacement angle was just a gimmick. You can call it something else if that makes you feel better about it. Go ahead and experiment with the tags and stuff if you like. Every visitor has their own sandbox.

Well, I graffitied your home page with some Protomen lyrics.

Also, your RSS link points to https://www.devastatia.com/rss but the feed actually lives at https://www.devastatia.com/personal_homepage/rss. Dunno if you want to fix your <head> link or set up a 301 redirect.

Without all of the Markdown stuff added by the forum, I mean.

@orchids:

Here's how I solved this in my parser. I match all of the <code> tagsets, generate a hash key for each code block, stash the blocks in an array, and replace them with placeholders in the content. After I parse all of the other markup, I reinsert the <code> tagsets into the content and parse the content with GeSHi to syntax highlight the code. If that isn't clear, I'll e-mail you my PHP file to examine.

take another peak at your post after this release goes out tonight ๐Ÿ˜‰

Not sure what you mean. The button in the footer points to https://www.devastatia.com/personal_homepage/rss and that's where the feed is.

Sorry. I wasn't talking about the footer. If you hit "view source" in the SPA and look inside the <head> block, you might see the following:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" href="/rss" title="๐Ÿ’• Devastatia ๐Ÿ’•">

I have a Firefox extension that sniffs <head> for feed links and displays an icon in the URL bar next to the reader mode icon if it finds one. That's what I was talking about.

Gotcha. The <base> probably wouldn't have resolved that either, since the URL had a leading slash. The sitemap tag was wrong too. Thanks!

Glad I could help.

quoting Devastatia:

The sitemap and RSS feed are the same script, actually:

RewriteRule ^rss$ /personal_homepage/feeds.php?feed=rss [L,QSA] RewriteRule ^sitemap$ /personal_homepage/feeds.php?feed=sitemap [L,QSA]

Nice.
