i wrote about my experience playing the last of us - i liked the game for the most part, but i wanted to talk about my early-game gripes and trouble getting into the game.

@butt also has a thread here to discuss the TV show

dam welp my 100% run is ending because grounded mode doesn't give you enough shivs to open all the shiv doors if you accidentally shiv a single enemy. guess i'll buy a ps5 now and play the second one

i really loved the last of us when it came out, i still think it's a solid game. did you play the ps4 remaster or the "Part I" remake? the sequel made a lot of changes to the movement, stealth, and just general gameplay that made it a way smoother and better experience

the remake ("Part I" on the end of the title) backports a lot of the changes, it might be worth checking that one out

i played the remake - i wasn't even aware "part 1" existed until just now.

i'm actually playing through the sequel now on grounded mode as my first playthrough. i thought grounded would be more do-able from the start, now that i understand how these games are meant to be played. it took me 24 hours of gametime to get through the first half. i'm at the hospital section, playing as Abby right now.

the sequel is definitely the better game - it fixed a lot of issues I had with the first game re: the game being difficult just because of the weapon sway, not having upgraded weapons, etc. there are still some upgrades which are annoying not to have though, like the crawl speed, so it's not perfect

I think my main major gripe with part 2 is that it's so fucking long. Like, I get that it's longer because i'm playing on the hardest difficulty and the segments are going to take me more time to learn enemy patterns and walking paths, but i just feel like all the new concepts have been introduced and now you're just playing the same encounters over and over.

ultimately, i think my issue is i prefer gameplay over story, and these games are definitely stronger in the writing than the gameplay.

i'm having fun with it though.
