So, WSJ has an article about how people are tired of all their subscriptions. Below is what I see when I try to read the article. Do you think they know?

news subscriptions are the boldest thing i've seen in the past year or so. every single news site has a paywall now and it's the only thing that gets me to click off an article.
they have to figure out a way to do native ads to get around people's adblockers because there's no shot i'm paying for information

yeah i typically would actually just open dev tools and remove/show the elements that needed changing, but honestly at this point, i'd rather not even give these sites the read

I'd like it if there could be some golden middle between subscription sites and the click-bait sites, because on the bottomline it's a question of how to generate income to keep the wheels spinning.

i think one of the bigger problems with this type of thing too - particularly for news sources - is if the larger/major news sources are putting themselves behind a paywall like this, its kind of driving people more towards 'free' sources that are basically just ad content articles or worse yet pipelines into conspiracy communities or whatever. like at this point its worrying that misinformation is now the more convenient option. not that i ever cared about WSJ specifically

I get what you mean -- it's a really good point I hadn't thought of before.
Although, I'm going to put on my tinfoil hat to say the following:
Who's to say that the larger news sources are more trustworthy? They have a much longer track record of providing good, quality content (most times), but what's stopping any big media company from putting out propaganda now? If anything, given how much we already trust them, we would be more inclined to believe whatever they publish. That's a really dangerous thought.
i get what you mean. I think I'd have to hope that if a platform is big enough to ask for a subscription model, that they are also subject to enough scrutiny that they also have to stay accountable. i think its also worth mentioning that a lot of average people simply aren't navigating to news sites anymore; unless its following a link from a facebook feed or similar - where we know that reliability isn't really on their track record..

Ain't that the truth. The only times I am generally on sites like that is if I am directly linked to them. I would probably be more interested if it wasn't for the hyper aggressive paywalls.
The only one I occasionally frequent is really only useful for local content in Australia. https://www.abc.net.au/news and it is directly funded by government taxation. Looks to be the only way you can provide a service like that any more.

If I see a propaganda site with a paywall popup, the first thing I do is check uBlock Origin to see if JavaScript is enabled. If I had enabled it on a particular site by mistake, I disable it and refresh. If I still can't read the article, I blackhole the domain in /etc/hosts.
Why? Because democracy dies behind paywalls.

The major news outlets are yellow journalism these days anyway. There's a reason they bemoan the strikes, and how work from home is killing commercial real estate. Thanks to Citizens United, corporations are people, and they're the only people that matter.
