Shit. Shane MacGowan just died. This is probably the most bummed I've been with a musical passing.

May the angels sing him to his seat!

MacGowan was a genius lyricist, a real poet. To me, his best songs are a wonderful and quite moving mix of sentimentality and cynicism.

It's funny, I love a lot of people in Costello's orbit, but have never given the man himself much of a listen. Must make a note to change that.

Not punk, but here's a cover of a track off that Costello produced Pogues album. Funny video.

Los Cenzontles - A Pair of Brown Eyes

Now, so as not to totally derail this thread, here be a random grab bag of punk tunes, all British.....

The Damned - Help

Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve?)

Gang Of Four - At Home He's A Tourist

And one American post-punk track, just because....

Pere Ubu - Humor Me

Damn, I forgot the Undertones!

Jesus, they look 12.

The lead singer, incidentally, is now a clean water activist. I think.

Since I'm off work and feeling a little bored, I might as well spam this thread some more.

The Monks. These guys are so crazy. They met while doing their military service at a base in Germany. Absolutely wild for their time and I reckon most definitely forerunners to garage, punk and a whole lotta other stuff. They also all rock a monk's tonsure hairstyle. Extra points for that. The second track below is a live one, so you can see them in their full glory. And the first shows they weren't exactly on the 60s peace and love train.

And then the New York Dolls. Clearly punk before punk. Plus their cross-dressing was somewhat ahead of its time, I suppose.

Killer guitar solo.

I only know the Pogues due to watching The Wire, one of my favorite shows of all time. Body of an American sounds very nostalgic.

Didn't The Wire have Steve Earle in it? He and the Pogues did a track together back in the late eighties.

The Pogues are also responsible for the best Christmas song of all time.

It does have a homophobic slur thrown in as a casual insult. So I hope that doesn't upset anyone.

getting hooked on Geese again. really should get behind and listen to their first album but their latest album this years was great. close firend of mine compared him to jimi hendrix and i can absolutely see it and his mix with art punk makes it better.
