it is pretty weird to me that modern SA is essentially for people who want to see that one anime and/or buy beef jerky

modern SA is all about calling for the demotion of mods and getting way too invested in forum drama because there's nothing else going on in peoples lives

luckily there are at least a dozen splinter sites. uh, most of them are pretty toxic but if you liked SA back in the day you probably have a strong stomach.

the least toxic one is probably bread and roses, but if you don't want to talk about anime or your extremely southern california "personal journey toward socialism" then it's kind of slow

Ask your doctor about me. If they recommend me, they're a fucking quack.

I have a hypothesis in two words: kiwi farms.
Not that a registration wall necessarily stops such people, but it does deter casual viewing.

Yep. SA itself went back and forth hiding various forums from public view basically the whole time.

So I understand, though I was never a goon myself. I also understand that the founders of KF had been SA goons themselves.

SA had an outsize impact on internet culture, for better or worse. Some sites and concepts that were started by SA users or SA itself include: 4chan (created by ADTRW user Christopher Poole aka moot) bellingcat (created by D&D poster Eliot Higgins aka Brown Moses) a whole bunch of torrent sites after BTB and DPPH closed down the concept of Let's Play videos
I'd argue that large-scale organized griefing also got its start, or was at least popularized by SA goons. As one example: For those who remember the online game Habbo Hotel, it was invaded by "Genos" way back when, which were hundreds of SomethingAwful goons with identical player outfits (gray with bald heads). They would clog up maps and dance floors and otherwise be quietly creepy and annoying. They would also queue in the music-playing area with songs that were just a cowbell.
Another example was an online dating game:

Profile pic checks out.
(I'm GenX, not zoomer. I just frequented Fark instead of SA back in the day.)

Where my 00s @???
thanks, I was an amazing project.
I recently looked at my SA account and my post average is still above 1 a day even though I haven't posted since 2015 [and not much after 2008 ish].
It is very very weird to be part of something that started small and weird and nerdy and had such an obscenely outsize impact on broader internet [and therefore, more than makes any sense, IRL] culture.

i don't think a lot of SA stuff is uniquely because of SA per se so much as it was the most robust internet space during a an era of cultural transition, so that is where people developed pre-meme "image macros" and "liking anime". it could all easily have happened somewhere else. not fark though, imagine being a fark user –couldn't be me if i was reincarnated a thousand times.

SA is cool because it's a forum and people post there. Other forums should also have people posting, but they don't, so they are terrible.
