Speaking of which, I've talked to quite a few of these clowns at my day job, and the ones closest to being WASPs tend to agree with statements like, "This is America; we speak English here." They don't get that if cultures blend into one in the melting pot, that means whatever distinct culture they possess gets assimilated into the mix, too.

And I'm going to stop there because this forum isn't the place for a diatribe about how whiteness is self-inflicted cultural erasure.

I also don't want to be too down on Vulonkaaz. Like you intimate in your post, it's super easy to get sucked into these pointless antagonisms.

For example, the other day, I came across a 'Star Wars is for children, Dune is for men' meme. It so amused me that, despite not having watched or read either since my teenage years, I wanted to immediately jump on r/starwars and start a fight....

I've got to admit that I don't think much of Star Wars, but I first read Dune as a kid, after seeing the David Lynch movie. Didn't quite get it at first, but it rewarded multiple readings.

If you haven't already, you should give Jodorowsky's Dune a watch sometime.

Alejandro Jodorowsky, best known for NOT making Dune. :)

I'm gonna have to see if that's available via streaming. If not, maybe I can find a copy at Port Royal.

A trailer, in case anyone's interested.

Now, be warned, while he has his fans (myself included), there are many who find Alejandro Jodorowsky insufferably pretentious.....

More pretentious than Yngwie Malmsteen?

Also, it looks like I can watch this on Apple TV or Prime Video, but only if I pay an additional rental fee on top of the existing subscription. Guess I'll bootleg it.

You mean people sometimes pay for stuff on the internet? Who knew?

I pay for shit on the internet all the time. But if I want to get nickeled and dimed I'll go to the doctor. If you're charging me a monthly fee for a streaming video service, and want to paywall certain videos or insert ads, I'm not going to put up with it. Why should I?

I'm basically the same, except, if I really want to get nickeled and dimed, I take my dog to the vet.

would anyone in this thread have any interest in participating in a community blog collection. Something like agoraroad is doing on their site:

https://forum.agoraroad.com/index.php?threads/agora-road-travelogue-november.6189/

Now that the 1 year anniversary of the site is coming up, I think it might be cool to highlight some of the content being posted on this site, give members some signal boost, and perhaps do it as part of some kind of competition/giveaway. Maybe a giftcard or something similar. The tricky part is I don't want to blatantly copy what agoraroad is doing, so maybe center the blogs around some kind of very vague theme and have posters write about that.

any thoughts?

Everything on my blog is Creative Commons BY-NC-SA, so you don't need my permission to link, quote, or even reproduce posts there as long as you provide attribution, aren't making money off it, and are releasing under the same terms; I granted permission in advance by using a CC license.

i guess i was thinking more along the lines of writing on your own respective sites, mentioning somewhere in the post your writing as part of the basement community writing month or whatever, then perhaps I would compile a list of snippets from each post and link back off to the participating sites.

So not necessarily writing for this site, just having snippets from your stuff quoted and linked back to.

If you do it, I will try. Kinda haven't met neither my IndieWeb Carnival nor my Agora Road Travelogue quotas for the past 2 months cheese smiley And that's really saying something cause they're not mutually exclusive / they help each other out.

hiiii if this isn't the proper place to share this lmk but i got to see KISS at madison square garden dec. 1st and talked about it in this blog post here.

though on the topic of agora road, that place intimidates me a lot lol. i mention it as a place that exists on my website, though i haven't had the guts to stick around and make an account there. and while i still don't quite understand how the travelogue works, a community blog thing to showcase stuff that we've done as a community definitely seems like a fun thing to do :]

Speaking of crazy HTML shit, does anyone feel like offering free advice to someone who hasn't done serious web stuff for over 15 years?

Okay, I'm writing up a little personal site at the moment. At the same time, I've developed a mania about being as backwards compatible as possible. It's become a thing.

Another good piece on this subject: Supporting extensive backwards compatibility on the web

Hey, thanks for remembering me. That's very interesting and useful.

Now, no more procrastination, I'm going to set a deadline and have my site up in two weeks. You watch, after all the warbling, it'll end up being some WP festival of bloat and I'll put a little 'best viewed with' button on it.

Thanks again!

Don't think any of you are particularly interested in becoming teachers anytime soon, but:

The Pupil

Had someone email me over the holidays about becoming a teacher and they said things like it was "speaking to them" or "the idealism is what attracts them". And my first instinct, because I've been there, is to shut that down. But at the same time it's a topic that has a surprising amount of nuance so I shared my thoughts and it also fit in with:

IndieWeb Carnival January 2024: Positive Internalization

Which I'm hosting and u hoes should at least consider participating in, lol!

Anyways, hope u enjoy!

my blog is hosting the indieweb carnival for the month of march, and while my official entry to this is still in draft mode, I wrote another blog about 4 things you can do to make your website accessible:

https://blog.basementcommunity.com/4-overlooked-web-accessibility-issues/

my indieweb carnival topic is about "accessibility on the personal web", but I wanted to get this blog out as a sibling article because it's something i feel strongly about.

It's a simple question: can you use your site without a mouse? If the answer is yes, bully for you, you're doing God's work.

Sites are pretty easy to navigate by keyboard once you know how. It's always advantageous to learn a few keyboard shortcuts, not just in browsers but throughout your whole computer. Quick-find and F3 are great for navigating on the sidebar on my site, but it also works fine just by tab-tabbing too, which is what most people with sudden onset mouselessness would most likely do, I think.

Also if you want accessible pagination, use < / > for first / last page instead of icons, they're much easier to find.
